Toy Guns: Maureen gave a report following our
discussion at last meeting. Steering Committee endorsed the
idea that stores should be respectfully asked to not sell toy
guns in our area. A letter from EYS was drafted, outlining that
it is problematic for the police and proven to be harmful for
kids to play with guns; the letter also presented that the
message we want to send as a community (especially the violent
issues we faced in June), is one of peace. Mareen and Jim
approached both stores we are aware of at this time. Both were
friendly and agreeable, but the decision to not sell toy guns
had to go through proper process. We will follow-up.
October 18, 2006 Follow-up:
Both stores agreed
that if the EYS were to purchase all the toy guns on their
shelves and in their current stock inventory, they would promise
to not reorder any more toy guns again. Pursuant to this,
Jim and Maureen went to the stores and purchased a total of 149
toy guns from one store and a total of 35 toy guns from the
second store. The total purchased were 179 toy guns.
